I love King Cake! Seriously, it is so good. It’s basically a giant cinnamon roll/croissant with icing and a tiny plastic baby inside. Since it is the day before Ash Wednesday, I’m getting my fill of sweets, which I always abstain from during Lent.
King Cakes were traditionally made to celebrate the three kings and their importance to the Nativity Story. Today, they’re commonly associated with Mardi Gras, but they are also used during Christmas celebrations.
I’m not Cajun or French or a native Louisianian at all but King Cakes are basically part of my childhood. Every year in grade school someone brought one in for our Mardi Gras party. I even found the baby in my piece of cake one year!
I debated making a homemade King Cake but settled on one from Fresh Market. It just isn’t Mardi Gras without King Cake!
